Book Design and Narrative with Jason Langer and Matthew Papa

Photography enthusiasts are currently enjoying a photobook boom; the photobook has never been more popular and accessible than it is today!

Do you have a body of work that may be ready to be published? How should your book be sequenced and designed to shape the meaning of the work? What projects or collections of photographs make for compelling and collectible photobooks? After collaborating on their award-winning book Berlin (Kerber Verlag, 2022), photographer Jason Langer and designer Matthew Papa offer an eight-week course developed to help photographers explore meaning and narrative in their work and begin designing a book maquette.

Boosted by advancements in digital printing technology and expansive ideas about what a photobook can be, the medium is flourishing as a viable way for artists to share their work and gain attention. Boutique publishing houses focusing on photography are proliferating and a growing number of academics are approaching the photobook with critical consideration as an art object.

In this online course, Jason and Matthew will share their book creation process from the initial editing of images to final decisions made about book format, sequencing, layout and text. Through examples and individual critiques for each participant, this workshop will help photographers gain insight into their body of work and come away with a starter dummy of their book project. This workshop focuses on editing, sequencing, exploring narrative, typography and design.
